Apples to Apples is a fun, energetic game of "crazy comparisons". During each round, a red noun card is chosen. Each player must select one of the green adjective cards to go along with it. The player that pulled the red card selects the green card that he thinks describes the noun the best. Sometimes the responses are serious, other times they are silly. This game is great to introduce new vocabulary words; each word has a description or synonyms on its card. This game is available through Toys 'R' Us for $21.99.

This game is for two to four players of ages eight to eleven. The players must follow directions to navigate the coordinates between places in town. There are two levels to this game. One side of the board only uses positive coordinates. The other uses positive and negative coordinates. The reverse side of the direction cards include the correct path so that players can make sure they moved the right way throughout the game. This game is sold by Learning Resources for $16.79.

Qwirkle is a game for ages six and up. It is a sorting game that requires the players to make columns or rows (like in a crossword style layout) either by common color or shape. The game pieces have a variety of shapes and colors and the players must strategically organize their pieces to use as many as possible. Two to four players are needed. MindWare sells this game on its website for $24.95 and a travel version for $14.95.

It is a fun game that can be played formally with the board game template or can be used in isolation to pass time on car rides. The overall game is set up as a board game with 25 games overall. Each game starts with an introduction that includes directions. Each game is only a couple minutes and focuses on basic facts. As a warning, the advertisements can be misleading and look like games on the page. As a reminder always monitor internet activity!

The Stacks for Kids is a site run by Scholastic. The website provides behind the scenes information on favorite authors and books. Pages on this site include Books and Authors, Games, Blogs, and Videos. Many features can be accessed without a profile, although a profile is available if desired. Because the Stacks covers many different books and authors, you should monitor that your child is choosing articles or videos appropriate to his or her reading level.

This website poses "challenges", questions that require estimation and logical reasoning. Each challenge includes visuals, hints that can be accessed, and a paragraph on how the challenge relates to skills used in the real world. This site would be great to work on with your child to make estimates and discuss answers and situations.

This page on Funbrain offers comics and literacy games. My favorite part is the online books. Flip through the pages on your computer to read books online. One popular book available is Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The online books are easy to navigate and are shown slightly smaller than an actual book.

Mad Libs is a great game for a wide range of ages to create silly stories by filling in adjectives, verbs, and nouns. Now this game is available not just on paper but as an app. The app can use voice input and images from your device's camera can be included. You can create a story with your child by taking turns filling in words. Apple offers this app for free.

This math app is recommended for ages four to twelve years old. Various levels of difficulty in the app allow the age range to be so broad. The player can pick a fish to play as. The fish eats different numbers that add up to a given basic fact number. For example, if the given number is four the fish can eat number combinations of 4 and 0, 1 and 3, and 2 and 2. The app puts a spin on basic fact practice. It is free from the Apple Online Store. Additional levels are available for purchase within the game (in-app purchases).

Math questions are given and the player can claim a Bingo spot by selecting the correct answer on his board. Once he has a line of correct answers he has Bingo. Within each of the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and subtraction selections there are levels of easy, medium, and hard. Multiple players can be saved to the app. This app is available on the Apple Online Store for $0.99. There are no in-app purchases.
